SELL development

To excel in today’s competitive employment market, university graduates and researchers need to have strong communication skills. This is where the Science and Engineering Language and Literacy (SELL) Development program can help.

SELL Students

Effectively demonstrating what you know, thinking critically and communicating your ideas clearly are key requirements for success in science and engineering. Therefore, our aim is to support you as you develop these skills throughout your course. These skills will serve you long after you finish your studies at Curtin.

Our workshops and resources help you identify ways to improve your academic language and writing skills. They include the SELL Diagnostic (a written diagnostic task) at the commencement of your course, the SELL program, Higher Degree by Research SELL, SELL PLUS, and embedded unit instruction.

The SELL Diagnostic allows us to gauge your current abilities and direct you towards appropriate workshops and resources. Our workshops are highly interactive and offer you opportunities to connect with other students at the faculty.

SELL workshops and resources

Discipline-specific workshops

There are a number of essential workshops to help you in your studies, e.g. Referencing and Paraphrasing; The Essential Features of Academic Writing; Verbal Wednesdays (how to give oral presentations confidently and effectively).

Online resources for self-learning

This is offered through Blackboard. Modules designed for self-paced learning are available – including Resources for Engineering Project Writing and SELL Online.

Embedded unit instruction

We work collaboratively with your lecturers to offer language and literacy development within units.

Personalised just-in-time support

Personalised support for language, academic literacy, numeracy, and core skills for Science and Engineering students (first year; second year; honours year; postgraduate and higher degree by research) is provided through a learning support service called Studiosity. This is a Curtin Library service which is accessible via Blackboard.

Coursework students can access Studiosity through their unit Blackboard site. Higher degree by research (HDR) students – please email for access to Studiosity through the SELL HDR Blackboard.

Faculty librarians

The Faculty of Science and Engineering have dedicated Faculty Librarians who specialise in science and engineering. They offer search strategy and research support, EndNote workshops and individual consultations.
