Mathematics enrichment classes

The course will run again in 2018 and will be open for enrolments 1 Jan 2018.


The classes in 2018 are scheduled in Term 2 (from Monday 30 April to Friday 22 June) and Term 3 (from Monday 16 July to Friday 7 September), 8 weeks in each block. The sessions for each year level are listed below. Note that these may be added to or cancelled, according to demand.

*Classes will not be running on Western Australia Day, Monday 4 June, and in lieu of the holiday, Monday classes will finish a week later on the 25 June 2018.

The main aim of the program is to increase the student’s interest in mathematics by engaging in activities that develop a sound mathematical understanding and to engage in challenges that will enhance the mathematical problem-solving skills of the students. These skills are essential in preparing and equipping our students to the challenges they face in the modern technology focused economy. The program is suitable for a broad range of mathematically talented students. Students will be issued with a certificate upon completion of the course.

The topics covered (there will be little or no overlap with topics covered in previous years) by the program are selected to complement the school curriculum and to challenge students with some non-standard problems. The course presenters are drawn from the WA mathematical community. The Course Director, Professor Lou Caccetta, is an outstanding mathematical scientist who is recognised nationally and internationally for his excellence in Teaching and Learning and Research and Development. The classes run in second and third terms as scheduled in an attachment to the letter for parents.

The classes are intended for able, but not necessarily brilliant, students. However, we point out that the program is not intended for weak students who need remedial studies. There will be some overlap with the mathematics covered at school but in general we intend to cover topics that are new to the students.

Enrolment

The opening date for 2018 enrolment is 1 Jan 2018, and the closing date is 13 April, though late enrolments are usually accepted into early May. The registration fee is for the 16 week course and is NON-REFUNDABLE once the classes start. (There is no fee reduction for late enrolments.)

Payment

Please note: Cash payments are not accepted.

For your convenience there is a link to an online payment form so that you may make your payment. Please note, there is an earlybird registration discount (10%) if payment is made before 31 March 2018.

Re-enrolment of current students $264, if paid by 31st March 2018, otherwise normal fee of $330 applies.

A 10% discount applies for subsequent/additional enrolments from the same family. This only applies to second child onwards, the additional discount does not apply for re-enrolment and early bird registration.

As the payments are handled by a separate department please ensure you also complete and send in your Registration Form (see formats available above) once payment is made to complete your enrolment.

To find us, look for Building 314 (the building pointed to) on the lower middle right hand side on the campus map. The administrative staff associated with the Mathematics Enrichment program are in Room 314.345, which is the Maths & Stats General Office, first office on your left (with the roller shutter) after coming up the main stairs to Level 3 and passing through the automatic opening glass doors.
